National Professional Teacher Organisation of South Africa
NAPTOSA is the second largest union in the education sector
NAPTOSA is the only education sector union that is truly representative of the demographics of South Africa
On behalf of the National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa (NAPTOSA), I wish to extend my heartfelt congratulations to you on your appointment as the 5th President of South Africa in the democratic era.
It is with great expectation that we look forward to your tenure as our President. We believe that, with the assistance of a new government, you will be able to reverse the tide of negativity that has gripped our country for so long and to place our economy on a firm footing by which all citizens will benefit. We trust you to instil a culture of integrity and good governance in government and the public service.
The President of NAPTOSA, Mr Nkosiphendule Ntantala, on behalf of NAPTOSA, congratulates Mr Cyril Ramaphosa on his election as President of the Republic of South Africa.
NAPTOSA is relieved that our country has now finally put the past months of uncertainty and destabilization behind us, said Mr Ntantala. We believe, as many others in South Africa do today, that we are entering a new era of hope and optimism, he said. We are, however, not naïve to think that the road ahead will be without some major challenges.
The Minister for the Public Service and Administration has in terms of section 3(5)(a) and 5(6)(b) respectively of the Public Service Act, 1994, as amended, determined that the employer subsidy for employees on GEMS be adjusted as below with effect from 1 January 2018.
After labour had submitted its consolidated wage demands at the end of last year, wage negotiations commenced in earnest this year. Please note that this NOT the final position and some changes may be agreed upon
as negotiations continue.
You will note that there is currently agreement between employer and labour on some issues, but as indicated above, this may change in order to reach agreement on others (e.g. salary increases).
The negotiations will continue on 12 February 2018 for a 2 week period, ending 23 February 2018.

The statement by the PIC on Monday, 5 February 2018, that it would be granting a loan of R 5bn to ESKOM has come as a surprise to NAPTOSA in view of an undertaking given to public service unions that pension funds of public servants would not be used to bail out state owned enterprises, unless improved governance can be demonstrated.
